‘Art of the Crossfade’ brings music, culture, conversation to Phoenix

J.PERIOD and Josh Kun lead a multimedia event at Walter Studios featuring hip-hop, DJs, storytelling and local artists

DJ and producer J.PERIOD and cultural historian Josh Kun will bring “The Art of the Crossfade” to downtown Phoenix on Thursday, Sept. 17, combining live music with storytelling, visual media and conversation about culture and community. The event runs from 7 to 11 p.m. at Walter Studios.

The national series takes its concept from a DJ’s crossfader, which blends one track into another. J.PERIOD and Kun use that musical technique as a broader metaphor for bringing different histories, cultures and perspectives together without requiring one to replace another. The project launched earlier this summer in Los Angeles and is touring during the nation’s 250th anniversary year.

The Phoenix lineup includes Mumu Fresh, freestyle rapper Harry Mack, DJ Mal-Ski, Daniel Crawford, Pariah Pete and “Se Habla Español” de Los Esplifs, with additional artists expected. Phoenix-based CALA Alliance, which connects artists and audiences through contemporary Latinx art and culture, is the local community partner.
