Students, staff across district celebrate veterans

Students from kindergarten through 12th-grade throughout the Peoria Unified School District will be celebrating members of the armed services on their campuses for Veterans Day.

Veterans Day round-up in Peoria Unified

Students, staff across district celebrate veterans

Students from kindergarten through 12th-grade throughout the Peoria Unified School District will be celebrating members of the armed services on their campuses for Veterans Day.

The following list includes some events that will be held for Veterans Day.

Through Nov. 15

District Administration Center: 6330 W. Thunderbird Road, Glendale

Peoria Unified’s District Administration Center has a Wall of Honor in the front lobby to recognize any family or friends of employees who have served in any branch in the United States military. Employees pay tribute to the veterans by bringing in a photo and a short write-up to add to the Wall of Honor.

Nov. 9

Desert Valley Elementary School: 12901 N. 63rd Ave., Glendale

Desert Valley will hold its 6th annual Veterans Day celebration at 9 a.m. Nov. 9. The event begins with a flag raising ceremony with the Cactus High School Air Force Junior ROTC and Ironwood High School Band. The program continues in the outdoor amphitheater, featuring student and guest speakers. Following the program, there will be an honorary walk around campus, celebrated by students in kindergarten through eighth-grade, teachers and school staff. The event will conclude with a breakfast for veterans in the cafeteria, provided by the Desert Valley junior honor society.

Nov. 10

Cactus High School: 7844 N. 61st Ave., Glendale

Between 8 and 11 a.m., cadets from Cactus High Schools’ Air Force Junior ROTC will place flags by the graves of all of the Veterans buried at the Glendale Memorial Park Cemetery.

Lake Pleasant Elementary: 31501 N. Westland Road

At 8:30 a.m., there will be a Veterans Day drive-through parade outside Lake Pleasant Elementary. Students will line the car parade route dressed in red, white and blue and will hold up signs of appreciation. At the end of the route, Lake Pleasant student council will give each Veteran a small thank you gift for their service.

Oasis Elementary: 7841 W. Sweetwater Ave.

Oasis Elementary National Junior Honor Society students will hold their annual Veterans Day lunch at 10:30 a.m. outside on the basketball courts. When veterans arrive, they will be greeted and escorted by students, to be seated and they will be provided lunch and dessert. The choir will perform for those in attendance.

Peoria High School: 12322 N. 113th Ave.

The Peoria High School Air Force Junior ROTC will present colors and hand out miniature flags to residents in a retirement home.

Sahuaro Ranch Elementary: 10401 N. 63rd Ave., Glendale

At 8:45 a.m., Sahuaro Ranch will host a Veterans Day drive-through parade. Students will be lined up along the campus with signs and banners for service members who drive through the parade.

Sunset Heights Elementary: 9687 W. Adam Ave.

Sunset Heights will also hold a drive-through parade at 9 a.m. in the school parking lot where students and teachers can honor veterans from the community with signs of gratitude.

Vistancia Elementary: 30009 N. Sunrise Point

Vistancia Elementary will hold a Veterans Day breakfast at 8:30 a.m. in the multipurpose room. The band and choir will perform, and veterans will receive thank you cards from staff and students. Following breakfast, veterans will be invited to walk the hallways for the school’s annual storming of the halls. The staff and students decorated the hallways, classroom doors and bulletin boards with messages of gratitude. Students will be wearing red, white and blue and holding up signs for veterans as they make their way through the halls.

Nov. 11

Centennial High School students at American Legion Post 62, 9847 W. Desert Cove Ave.

At 11 a.m., Centennial High School’s PSBN/Film & TV students will broadcast a live stream of the annual Flag Raising Ceremony at American Legion Post 62, just as they have done every year since 2016. The ceremony can be viewed online.

Peoria High School students at American Legion Post 101, 15826 N. Dell Webb Boulevard Sun City.

The Peoria High School Air Force Junior ROTC will present the colors for American Legion Post 101 at Sunland Memorial Park for their annual Veterans Day celebration.
