Peoria Arts will present a six-month music series spotlighting musicians, vocalists, and dancers from around the world.

The Global Sounds Series of free Wednesday concerts starts Jan. 10 at the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts, 10580 N. 83rd Drive, and is designed to introduce local audiences to artists who possess diverse cultural and musical perspectives through June.

“We are kicking off the new year with this popular series,” Marylou Stephens, Arts, Culture and Library Services director, shared in a press release. “These musicians share their passion and talent to transport the audience to another culture. This immersive experience offers the audience an emotional renewal through an international excursion of music.”

All performances begin at 7 p.m.

The concert series schedule is:

  • Jan. 10: Giovanni Kiyingi & Friends. Valley-based Ugandan folk, fusion and Afrobeat singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, originally from Uganda, was a standout entry in NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest in 2023.
  • Feb. 14: Andrés Martínez & Ritmo Latino. Spend Valentine’s Day listening to a Latin beat with one of the top jazz ensembles in the Southwest featuring a lead vocalist who has appeared on national stages including Super Bowl XLIX.
  • March 13: Kilted Spirit. This Irish and Celtic rock band will deliver an evening of toe-tapping jigs and reels.
  • April 10: Kawambe-Omowale African Drum and Dance Theatre. Celebrating 30 years in the Valley, this dynamic troupe offers a glimpse of African and African Diaspora culture through performances of drumming, dancing, singing, and storytelling.
  • May 1: Layali Al-Sham. Based on the campus of Arizona State University, this ensemble explores the enchanting rhythms and sounds of the Middle East.
  • June 12: Yellow Bird. This renowned ensemble celebrates the spirit of the American Indian through a repertoire of songs, dances, stories and dialogue that entertain and educate audiences.

The Peoria Center for the Performing Arts is adjacent to Grand and Peoria avenues with free street parking and nearby lots available. Reservations are encouraged and available two weeks before each concert.

Complimentary tickets may be reserved through the Center’s box office by visiting theaterworks.org or calling 623-815-7930.
