Peoria approves agreement for new circulator, allows Valley Metro contractor to operate POGO

Peoria is sealing the deal for its new circulator route in the northern part of the city.

The city approved an intergovernmental agreement amendment for transit services with the Regional Public Transportation Authority, or Valley Metro, April 2.

This amendment will allow for Valley Metro’s contractor, Total Transit, to operate the new Peoria On The Go (POGO) route at an estimated cost to the city of $239,741, through June 30, 2019.

This amendment implements the POGO service, which will start April 22. This will be Peoria’s first circulator, and connect communities with destinations along the route including P83 Entertainment District, Four Corners area, Sunrise Mountain and Liberty high schools, Sunrise Mountain Library, retail, grocery, medical, New River Trailhead and other local amenities. The route will also provide a connection at the transit center at Arrowhead Towne Center.

Officials said the route will operate in an area of about 18,000 residents and nearly 8,000 jobs located within ¼ mile of the stops. POGO will run Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

In addition, the amendment revises the cost of fixed route bus service provided by Valley Metro and paid for using regional funding, including Peoria Avenue, Thunderbird Road, and the Grand Avenue Express. The region reclassified five days of service from “holiday” to “regular” which increased the service levels on these days to full instead of reduced service levels. Cost estimates were also revised resulting in a lower cost with improved service levels. Valley Metro uses regional transportation funds to pay for this service directly, therefore there is no cost to the city.

The city of Peoria transit division provides a variety of services including express and fixed bus routes, transportation of Americans with Disabilities Act clients and Dial-A-Ride transit. Some of these services are provided through an agreement with the Regional Public Transportation Authority.
