County attorney: Council member residency investigation under Peoria city attorney purview

Complaints have been filed alleging Acacia councilor does not live in her district

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office has responded to Peoria Councilmember Jennifer Crawford’s request to investigate whether she resided in Peoria when she took office through the present.

In a letter sent to the councilor dated Oct. 6, Rachel Mitchell confirmed that while Crawford has lived in Peoria during that time, the county does not have the authority to determine whether the councilor specifically lives in the Acacia District, the area in the southern part of the city she was elected to represent.

The Peoria City Charter states all council members, except the mayor, shall be selected from six geographic regions within the city and shall be a resident from the district from which election is sought, and “shall continue such residence therein for the term for which the candidate is selected.”
