Security at Peoria Unified board meetings has increased

Security at Peoria Unified School District governing board meetings has increased in response to recent heated call to the publics, in which topics have ranged from the district’s mask policy to critical race theory.

It reached a near fever pitch at the last public meeting, May 13, during which the meeting briefly went virtual after police officers present and governing board members feared it may be difficult to keep the peace.

Mask policy and critical race theory in K-12 have become touchstones among local and national conservative groups during the past few months, with questions raised at several districts across the state and the Arizona Legislature taking up Senate Bill 1532 seeking to restrict what teachers can talk about regarding race.
