Musical Instrument Museum celebrates the rhythms of Brazil

Weekend brings samba, bossa nova, capoeira and Brazilian culture to the Valley

The Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, just a short drive from Paradise Valley residents, will celebrate the music and culture of Brazil during “Experience Brazil,” from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 3-4. The two-day event is included with paid museum admission and free for MIM members.

Programming includes Brazilian music throughout the day, beginning with guitarist Luis Martinez and continuing with the folk sounds of MaisCéu, classic samba and bossa nova from Bossa Brazil, and samba, axé and forró from Radio Brazil Band. Visitors can also make a pocket ganzá, a Brazilian shaker.

MIM curator Daniel Piper will discuss the development of samba, reggae and Afro-Brazilian music in Bahia, while Brazilian American songwriter Jimmie Griffith will explore the musical legacy of Minas Gerais. Grupo Axé Capoeira of Arizona will lead a workshop introducing the basics of capoeira, the Afro-Brazilian art combining music, dance, acrobatics and martial arts. Activities are first come, first served.
