Children ages 17 and under can visit Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West for free Sept. 5-6 as the museum celebrates the opening of its newest exhibit over Labor Day weekend.
“Woven: Navajo Textiles from the Pelberg Collection” explores the artistry and traditions behind contemporary Navajo weaving through seven works by Diné (Navajo) artists. The exhibit highlights how generations of knowledge and regional traditions are combined with individual choices in color, pattern, materials and design.
Families visiting during the opening weekend can participate in hands-on activities, including a take-home weaving project. The exhibit also includes touchable displays featuring raw wool, dyed skeins and a woven sampler, along with images of Diné weavers working at their looms.
The works are part of the Art and Linda Pelberg Family Collection of Native American Art, which was donated to Western Spirit in 2022 after nearly 50 years of collecting.
