Work begins this month on safety upgrades along Main Street in east Mesa

$38.5 million project expected to take two years to complete

A five-mile stretch of Main Street between Sossaman and Meridian roads in east Mesa will be improved with the addition of bike lanes and sidewalks, state transportation officials said.

The work will begin this month. The road will have two lanes in each direction, reduced from three, to provide room for the bike lanes and sidewalks, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Construction will include improvements to drainage and lighting.

Crews are scheduled to start work as soon as Monday, Feb. 5, by setting initial work zones along Main Street between Loop 202 and Meridian Road, officials said, adding access to local businesses will be maintained.

Most work will take place on weekdays with at least one lane open in each direction. Some weekend and weeknight work may be needed at times, according to ADOT.

The $38.5 million Main Street improvement project, also known as the 60X project, is expected to take two years to complete.

Upon completion, ADOT will turn over to the Maricopa County Department of Transportation the stretch of Main Street, which once operated as the old Highway 60 route before the addition of US 60.
