Police investigate deadly Mesa shooting

A deadly shooting early Saturday morning remains under investigation, Mesa police said.

The shooting occurred at about 3:40 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, in the 8800 block of east Colbe Circle where police found Omar Valdez, 26, in the road with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital.

The shooter was identified as a 47-year-old homeowner in the area, but no charges have been filed, police said.

Officers detained the homeowner along with three other adults.

Police learned that Valdez came to the home looking for his girlfriend’s cousin. There was no other relationship with anyone else in the home, according to authorities.

“The homeowner identified themselves as the shooter and told officers that they shot Omar after Omar pointed a gun at their son in the doorway,” police said in a release.

The homeowner’s handgun was located inside the front door of the home, police said.

The case remains active, and police ask anyone with information to call 480-644-2211.
