Police arrest, charge 13-year-old for 100 mph 'joyride' through Gilbert, Mesa

A 13-year-old boy was arrested Monday and faces multiple charges after what police called a "joyride" in his mother’s Chevrolet Tahoe that reached speeds of more than 100 mph, went airborne at times and collided with a railing outside a business, Gilbert authorities said.

The Mesa Police Department’s air unit, known as Falcon, spotted the Tahoe just before 1:50 a.m. Oct. 20 speeding near North Higley and East Elliot roads in Gilbert.

The vehicle reached speeds of more than 80 mph on residential streets, according to a release from the Gilbert Police Department.

“With Mesa Falcon providing real-time aerial updates, multiple Gilbert units attempted traffic stops on the vehicle. The driver failed to stop and made multiple evasive maneuvers to flee and elude the officers,” the release stated.

The vehicle continued into Mesa, speeding through a red light.

Officers attempted another traffic stop but lost track of the vehicle and driver, who officials said was speeding at 100 mph, drove without headlights, ignored traffic control devices “and was even seen going airborne over uneven terrain, both on major roads and through residential neighborhoods.

“This extreme behavior was unprovoked by any direct police pursuit, as no marked or unmarked units were close enough to engage.”

The vehicle returned to Gilbert shortly after 2 a.m. where it collided with a handicap railing at a business near Cooper and Baseline roads. A passenger in the vehicle was later seen leaving the vehicle but was not found, according to the release.

The vehicle eventually came to a stop in a neighborhood near Recker and Warner roads. The driver left the vehicle, jumped into a backyard and was caught soon after by Mesa and Gilbert officers.

There were no injuries, police said, adding the teen driver admitted to taking his mother’s Tahoe without permission.

He was booked into the custody of the Maricopa County Juvenile Detention Center – Durango on charges from Gilbert police that included unlawful flight from law enforcement, reckless driving, speeding, striking fixtures on a highway and others.
