Fellow officers, family and well-wishers turned out en masse at Apache Junction High School today for a somber final salute to Officer Gabriel Facio, who was shot in the line of duty and died June 8.

Facio, 46, a three-year veteran on the force, died from injuries suffered while answering a June 2 radio call about a driver waving a gun in what was described as a threatening manner.

Included in plans for today’s event were a barbecue, a car wash and a gathering in the high school gymnasium. Funds received from today’s events had been designated to help meet medical, funeral and related expenses.

During the observance, Apache Junction Police Chief Michael Pooley hailed Facio’s service, recalling him as “someone who showed his passion for people through his service to others.”

Funeral services have been planned for Monday, June 16.

The BBQ fundraiser supporting Officer Gabriel Facio’s family is 11 a.m.-7 p.m. June 11 at Apache Junction High School.

The high school is at 2525 S. Ironwood Drive in Apache Junction.
