Mountain View Funeral Home & Cemetery in Mesa marks 75 years

Posted

Long before Mesa’s skyline rose and subdivisions replaced citrus groves, families gathered on open land at the edge of town to say goodbye to loved ones.

In 1951, Al Coury Sr. established Mountain View Memorial Gardens. Since then, three generations of the Coury family have helped thousands of families.

Mountain View Funeral Home & Cemetery will host a 75th anniversary ribbon-cutting ceremony 10-11 a.m. March 27 at its Mesa property, 7900 E. Main St., with the official cut scheduled for 10:15 a.m.

The morning is to include light refreshments and guided tours of the Desert Star Mausoleum, offering community members an opportunity to honor the past while experiencing the grounds that have quietly served families for decades. Guests are encouraged to RSVP by calling 480-832-2850.

Coury Sr. was known as one of Arizona’s youngest automobile dealers, as well as a farmer and rancher, according to a release.

In 1981, the funeral home was added as the second generation stepped into leadership. After the passing of Al and Yvonne Coury, ownership transitioned within the family in 2008 when Dan Coury Sr. purchased the business from his siblings. Soon after, Greg Coury joined, carrying the legacy into a third generation, the release states.

“For our family, reaching 75 years is about faithfulness,” Greg Coury, owner of Mountain View Funeral Home & Cemetery, said in the release. “We have been trusted in the most sacred moments of thousands of families’ lives. That kind of legacy is earned one family at a time. It is a responsibility we carry with humility.”

Throughout the year, the property opens not only for services, but for community traditions such as Easter Sunrise Service, Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony, Pet Blessing, Lights of Love, Wreaths Across America, and a charitable car show that brings families and community members together.

“I see myself as a steward of what my grandfather started,” Coury said in the release. “Our responsibility is to build upon the foundation, not replace it. We want to modernize thoughtfully while preserving the traditions families value most.”
