Mesa teacher awarded full scholarship to attend national conference on American Revolution

Posted

Mesa Public Schools teacher Juanita Hernandez was recently honored as one of two teacher scholarship recipients at the 13th annual conference on the American Revolution in Glen Allen, Virginia, a suburb of Richmond.

The conference drew an audience of over 150 Revolutionary War enthusiasts, public historians and history professors.

Bruce and Lynne Venter of Goochland, Virginia, produce the conference through their tour and conference company, America’s History LLC. Bruce is president and CEO and Lynne is vice president and CFO.

Each year the Venters bring together 10 award-winning historians for the three-day event that covers the military and political aspects of the American Revolution.

“Attendees consistently rate our conference as ‘premier’ on their evaluation forms, so we trademarked it,” Bruce Venter said in the release.

This year’s conference included nationally known historians who spoke on topics like the Revolution as world-wide event, the Dutch in the American Revolution, the Spanish general Bernando de Galvez, the Swamp Fox, violent during the war, naval press gangs and a regional event, the siege of Fort Stanwix.

“Last year we formed a nonprofit entity called the Foundation for America’s History to support Teacher Scholars, giving them a chance to explore topics that their state-mandated curriculums might overlook. We strongly feel our teacher scholars can enrich the educational experiences of their students by attending our conference,” Bruce said in the release. “A teacher scholar’s attendance at the conference is fully funded by donations to the Foundation — meaning they receive airfare or travel reimbursement, hotel accommodations, meals and free registration — the whole deal.” Venter said.

Juanita Hernandez is a 27-year veteran of Mesa Public Schools. She is an elementary school educator at Hermosa Vista Elementary School with a strong interest in American history, particularly as it relates to improving how young students learn about the past. She actively seeks opportunities to deepen her understanding of the Revolutionary War era in order to strengthen her teaching. Hernandez’s scholarship was funded by Lorna Hainesworth of Randallstown, Maryland.
