MCSO, Mesa PD team up to arrest suspect in city crime spree

A suspect will be booked on several felony charges after a series of events Thursday that involved a stolen golf cart, firing an AR-style rifle inside a business, an attempted home invasion and wrecking another stolen vehicle, authorities said.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded about 6 a.m. Feb. 1 to an armed robbery at a business near Crismon Road and Apache Trail. A man and a woman who arrived on a stolen golf cart broke into the occupied business, and the man shot multiple rounds into the store using an AR-style rifle before fleeing, according to an MCSO release.

Deputies found the golf cart near 105th Place and University Drive, but the pair had fled.

While working at the two scenes, a “trouble call” came in near Crismon Road and University Drive where the male suspect involved in the earlier incident attempted a home invasion and fired multiple rounds at the residence, MCSO officials said.

“MCSO deputies and Mesa PD officers arrived and saw the suspect, causing him to take off running to the wash area. The suspect then stole another car, while attempting to flee from the deputies he later crashed into an unrelated vehicle and wrecked the stolen vehicle he was driving near Hawes Road and McKellips Road,” the MCSO release stated.

The suspect fled the scene on foot and was found by Mesa officers and MCSO deputies in the wash area to the north of the crash. He was taken into custody.

No law enforcement personnel were hurt, and the suspect was taken to a  hospital for precautionary reasons surrounding the vehicle accident.

“Efforts made by MCSO deputies and Mesa PD Officers showed an incredible collaboration and teamwork to capture the armed suspect,” MCSO Sgt. Joaquin Enriquez said in the release.

“This individual showed extreme violence with his actions, jeopardizing the safety of our community.”

MCSO detectives are continuing to work on the case, and authorities said Monday night that more information will be available after the suspect is booked into jail.
