Journals for moms, dads a resource for Native American Fatherhood and Families Association in Mesa

Building strong families through reflection

Posted

Native American Fatherhood and Families Association, which is in the business of strengthening families, has new resources developed by its team — 52-week guided journals for moms and dads.

The journals are designed to support parents and caregivers as they reflect on their roles as a father or mother. As participants write in these journals, they strengthen their role as father and mother and become more present in their families’ lives, according to a release.

Studies show that journaling strengthens families by deepening self-awareness and identity, it states.

When individuals take time to reflect on their values, experiences and behaviors, they gain clarity about who they are and what matters most. That clarity translates into more intentional roles as parents and partners. Instead of repeating unhealthy patterns, individuals are better equipped to make thoughtful, value-based decisions that contribute to family stability and trust, the release states.

“When parents become more emotionally aware with reflection through journaling, the quality of their relationships naturally improve,” NAFFA founder Albert Pooley said in the release.

Native American Fatherhood and Families Association works to educate and inspire parents in over 350 Native tribes and agencies across the country and Canada. Starting in 2003, Pooley developed a curriculum, called Fatherhood is Sacred, specifically designed to teach Native American fathers to be responsible parents. Since then, the program has expanded to include Motherhood is Sacred, Linking Generations by Strengthening Relationships and Addressing Family Violence and Abuse, Suicide Prevention and Transforming Tomorrow’s Youth programs.

Each journal offers weekly guided reflections and practical prompts to encourage opportunities to strengthen relationships and deepen family connections. For information, go to nativeamericanfathers.org. Look for it on Amazon under Albert Pooley.
