A one-story building addition to a mini-storage business is to be constructed on 5 acres east of Ellsworth Road on the south side of Southern Avenue in Mesa.

The planned look and landscaping for the Extra Space Storage were discussed Dec. 12 by the Mesa Design Review Board. No formal action was taken by the board.

The business has two mini-storage buildings and RV spaces at the site, Staff Planner Kwasi Abebrese said during the meeting.

“The proposed site plan includes the addition of a one-story, 29,495-square-foot mini-storage building at the existing site where the RV parking spaces are currently located. And the proposal includes a relocation of the existing 48 RV parking spaces and a reduction from 48 to 30 RV spaces. And these RV spaces are proposed to be relocated to the southwest corner of the existing site,” he said.

Vehicle access is to be provided from an existing driveway from East Southern Avenue, Abebrese said.

Omar Abdallah of Rose Law Group PC is the applicant. Extra Space Properties Two LLC is the owner.

Extra Space Storage’s mini-storage facility, which was developed in 2008, has two main buildings with 770 mini-storage units, according to a written project narrative.

“A cell phone tower previously existed on the southwest side but is no longer active. (Extra Space Storage) is proposing to construct a new one-story and 29,495-square-foot climate-controlled building containing 248 mini-storage units south of the existing buildings,” it states.

The all-volunteer Mesa Design Review Board is unique in that its composition is set by the zoning ordinance to include two architects; two from other design professions such as landscape architecture, engineering, urban planning, interior design or other design-related background; one contractor or developer; and two residents, according to the city’s website.
