Mesa police officers' pursuit of a domestic violence suspect Monday night led to a "high-risk traffic stop" and an officer-involved shooting, authorities said.
The unidentified suspect was injured by gunfire and is in stable condition at a hospital, police said. There were no injuries to the officer during the incident that ended at Alma School Road and Main Street.
It began when police responded to a 911 domestic violence call just after 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, near Country Club Drive and Broadway Road.
A woman told officers she was physically assaulted by her boyfriend and that a gun was used, according to police.
While officers were at the location, police said, the man drove by in his vehicle, and officers began to follow him to the area of Alma School Road and Main Street.
"A high-risk traffic stop was performed just south of the intersection, and the man leaned out of his vehicle holding what appeared to be a handgun," police officials said in a release. "This is when the officer-involved shooting occurred."
One officer fired, and the man was hit by gunfire.
Police said "less lethal measures" then were used to get the man out of his vehicle.
He was treated at the scene for gunshot wounds and taken to the hospital, police said.
