Design reviewed for The Nox concert venue in Mesa

Posted

A large-scale commercial recreation development — The Nox — is planned on 6.2 acres near East Ray Road and South Power Road in Mesa.

The Mesa Design Review Board on Dec. 10 discussed the look and landscaping for the concert venue.

It is to have 406 parking spaces provided by a shared parking agreement. Vehicular access to the site is provided from a shared access from Seaver Avenue, according to a city of Mesa document.

Vince Di Bella of Adaptive Architects is the applicant. GIA 394 LLC is the owner.

The Nox will generate revenue from food and beverage sales, artist merchandise, sponsorship deals and exclusive event packages, Di Bella said in a written project narrative.

“The building architecture concept hearkens from ‘historic Chicago warehouse’ utilizing old world brick, precast concrete and archways to create a theatrical presence and visual prominence. The application of materials is designed to present as a ‘building developed over time’ with varying brick colors and textures. The use of pre-cast concrete elements further defines the building architecture for columns, moldings, trims and archways,” it states.

“The owner desires to develop a new facility that will consist of a two-story performance music venue building with associated indoor and outdoor balcony and patio seating. Related support functions will also be provided on the ground level. Recording studio space will be provided in addition to the music space located on the ground floor north side,” it states. “The facility is intended to be multifunctional, meaning it will be utilized not only for music events but intimate dining/music events, celebrations and specialty artistic events. The total gross building area of all floors inclusive of the exterior balcony areas is approximately 72,065 square feet.”

A companion parcel with a 47,979-square-foot single-story warehouse is intended to be a pad-ready site with site improvements installed to support parking needs. The building may be constructed at a future date and anticipated to have a depressed loading dock, it states in the narrative.

The all-volunteer Mesa Design Review Board is unique in that its composition is set by the zoning ordinance to include two architects; two from other design professions such as landscape architecture, engineering, urban planning, interior design or other design-related background; one contractor or developer; and two residents, according to the city’s website.
