The Mesa Design Review Board on Dec. 10 discussed the look and landscaping for a Hawaiian Bros Island Grill limited-service restaurant with a drive-thru near Longmore and Southern Avenue in Mesa.

A 3,542-square-foot building and 757-sqaure-foot outdoor patio are planned. There are to be 33 parking spaces on the 0.5-acre site at 1440 W. Southern Ave., according to a city of Mesa document.

Tim Flynn of Stine Enterprises Inc. is the applicant. Unified Southern CJ LLC is the owner.

A building with a Carl’s Jr. quick service restaurant will be remodeled within the existing footprint with 46 proposed interior seating spaces, according to a written project narrative.

“The existing drive-thru lane will remain along the north and west side of the building with seven proposed queuing stalls. Parking layout for the project will remain the same. The waste enclosure will be reused and remain in the existing location on the northwest corner of the property,” it states.

The all-volunteer Mesa Design Review Board is unique in that its composition is set by the zoning ordinance to include two architects; two from other design professions such as landscape architecture, engineering, urban planning, interior design or other design-related background; one contractor or developer; and two residents, according to the city’s website.
