Rooms will be added and a pool moved in a planned expansion of the Azure Hotel east of Mesa Drive on the south side of Main Street.
The look and landscaping for the hotel on 2 acres were approved in a 4-0 vote Oct. 17 by the Mesa Design Review Board. Chair Scott Thomas was absent.
“It is an addition of 12,058 square feet for a two-story extension of the hotel. In the rear half of the property they are also adding parking spaces to bring up the current existing 31 spaces to a total of 82 spaces as well as relocating the pool on the property,” Staff Planner Chloe Durfee Daniel said at the meeting.
The case is to go to before the Mesa Board of Adjustment Nov. 1 to seek a development incentive permit. A work session begins at 4:30 p.m. and a meeting at 5:30 p.m. in the lower council chambers, 57 E. First St.
Joseph Osborn of JSQUARED Construction and Design is the applicant. Gosai and Grandsons LLC is the owner.
The addition is to include 28 rooms, a fitness center and a breakfast-eating area, according to a written project narrative.
“The pool and outside lounge area will be new and the existing parking lot will be expanded. The parking lot will be landscaped. The reason for the request is they would like to improve the unimproved land on this property with additional hotel rooms to generate more business for the hotel,” it states.
The all-volunteer Mesa Design Review Board is unique in that its composition is set by the zoning ordinance to include two architects; two from other design professions such as landscape architecture, engineering, urban planning, interior design or other design-related background; one contractor or developer; and two residents, according to the city’s website.
