An arrest has been made related to Tuesday’s fatal hit and run in Estrella that led to the death of 13-year-old Dylan Buensuceso.

Suspect Richard Romo, 44, was arrested at his home on Thursday evening on two felony charges related to leaving the scene of the accident that occurred Tuesday afternoon near 182nd and San Gabriel drives.

Goodyear police arrested Romo “without incident” less than a quarter of a mile from the scene of the accident.

“The investigation of the hit and run crash that occurred April 26, 2022, that took the life of a 13-year-old boy has been the top priority of Goodyear Police,” the department said in an announcement.

Romo was taken to the Goodyear Police Department for questioning.

Buensuceso was an eighth-grader at Estrella Mountain Elementary School. On Tuesday, April 26, he was riding his bike home from school when he was struck by a white Ford Pickup truck.

He died in the hospital later that night as a result of his injuries. The driver, believed by police to be Romo, had fled the scene.

In a Facebook post, Buensuceso’s aunt, Monica Buensuceso, expressed gratitude toward the Estrella community for keeping the spotlight on her nephew’s death.

“God is so good,” she wrote, adding that Frederick, Buensuceso’s father, credited the community for its persistence.

“He (Frederick)  said if it wasn’t for this community to (be) so persistent, he would not have been caught,” Monica wrote. “So thank you all, thank you for helping get justice for Dylan.”

The family of Buensuceso has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses.  The fundraiser can be found here.
