Letter by Terrance Lykins of Surprise
All people need an affordable place to live.
There is much debate in Surprise over affordable housing.
Affordable housing is not low-income housing. My son, who is a firefighter, moved to Liberty Hill, Texas, with his wife and three children. He told me he was moving into affordable housing in Liberty Hill. I had great reservations and apprehension when he said this.
I too thought this was low-income housing and I was prepared for the worst because of the type of housing I had seen in the past. I went to visit. Immaculate grounds, clean safe looking place. I could not believe how nice his apartment was inside.
Because of affordable housing, my son was able in five years to save up for a house and move out. If not for affordable housing, my son would have never been able to do this.
I reconsidered my thinking on affordable housing after seeing it first hand and how much it helped my son and potentially other people.
