American women have a rich history of military service; we can’t allow it to be erased

OPINION — With increasing emphasis on elimination of diversity, equity and inclusion — DEI — the current administration is making a determined effort to roll back the rights of women, as well as acknowledgments of their successes, including their contributions to U.S. military history.

As background for this opinion, I credit and liberally quote from an article in the April 2026 issue of The Atlantic magazine titled, “The Women of Avenger Field” by Ellen Cushing.

Throughout our 250-year history, women have served America during wartime. During the American Revolution, the Civil War and Spanish-American War, women were camp followers assisting soldiers as nurses and cooks. Some even dressed as soldiers and entered combat.
