West Valley farmers market to expand to Surprise

Momma’s will have 3 locations this fall

Momma’s Organic Market will be staying in Glendale permanently, will be adding a new — yet old — Peoria location, and will also add a Surprise market.

The longtime local market, going into its 13th year in the West Valley, spent its time up until this summer in Peoria at Park West, 9744 W. Northern Ave. But when the lease there wasn’t renewed, the popular market had to look for a new home and debuted this past July at Arrowhead Towne Center, 7700 W. Arrowhead Towne Center, next to the AMC Theater in Glendale, yet unsure of its longterm future.

“I’m glad that Arrowhead Mall was willing to take us on,” market owner Christa Esquibel told the Peoria Independent last month.

The market announced on its Facebook page Aug. 9 that not only will the Arrowhead site be staying “permanently” every Saturday going forward, Momma’s Organic Market will return to Park West for a market there every Wednesday evening starting in October.

Also, the market announced, they will open the new Sterling Grove Farmers Market, off the 303 and Cactus Road in the Sterling Grove community in Surprise, every Sunday starting next month.

“We have room to expand and have so many new and amazing vendors joining us,” the market’s Aug. 9 Facebook post announced. “We ran out of room at our previous spot and (Arrowhead) is allowing us to have the biggest season we have ever had.”

The Arrowhead location will continue its 8-11 a.m. Saturday summer hours through this month, after which time the market hours shift to 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays from September through May.

The Park West location will be open 4-7 p.m. Wednesdays from October through May starting Oct. 7.

The new Surprise location will be open 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sundays from September through May starting Sept. 6.

Momma’s Organic Market began in the Peoria front yard of Cindy Bauer before quickly expanding.

“She lived on an acre when we tried having a little get together,” Ms. Esquibel remembered in July of her mom's market's modest beginning. “We didn’t think it was gonna be all that big. We had like 12 vendors, and 500 people showed up. And we said, ‘OK, we’ve got to find a place to have this.’”
