Speak Up: Arizona legislator seeks to name Loop 202 after Charlie Kirk

Posted

A report by journalist Howard Fischer that the president of the Arizona Senate wants to rename a portion of the Loop 202 freeway for assassinated Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk drew opposition from some fellow state lawmakers. “Charlie Kirk is a son of Arizona who embodied the very fabric of our founding fathers when they crafted the Bill of Rights,” state Sen. Warren Petersen of Gilbert told Fisher, a phrase the Gilbert Republican and GOP candidate for attorney general said means the 31-year-old Kirk made Arizona his home even though he grew up and spent more than half his life in Illinois.

  • “Charlie Kirk can and should be remembered in many ways, but not by renaming the Santan freeway. Please don’t rename any of our highways, for that matter, except for in memory of fallen officers.” — Anthony D. via email
  • “Regarding renaming the 202 freeway after Charlie Kirk, I say absolutely no! I was born and raised here; it took how many years to get rid of the name Squaw Peak and this is equally as disgusting. No! — Susie Brazil via email
  •  “I do not want my tax dollars to go to renaming a freeway I pay for to be named after an organization I believe grooms children to hate people that are different than they are. The Kirks  do not uphold the teachings of Jesus.” — Thomas Fournier via email
  • “Perception is the problem. God bless Charlie Kirk.” — Stephen Graves via email
  • “I have lived here  since 2004. I have never heard of Charlie Kirk before he was killed. I agree with every reason for not renaming the Loop 202 to the political and as we still are a democratic nation last I heard.” — Catherine Dionne via email
