Dysart candidate should set a better example for students, reader says

OPINION — I recently saw a photo that appeared to show Dysart Governing Board candidate William Coniam wearing a “No Kings” shirt.

People are entitled to their political views, including strong opinions about President Trump or any other president. Freedom of speech is fundamental to our country. But school board elections should also prompt a broader conversation about the example elected officials set for students.

We can disagree with a president’s policies, decisions and political philosophy while still teaching young people to respect the institutions of our constitutional republic and the peaceful democratic process.
