Midwestern University's Glendale campus remains a driver of economic growth and healthcare education in Maricopa County, contributing $767 million to the local economy in 2023-24, according to a study by consulting firm Applied Economics.
The university’s operations, local vendor purchases, and spending by employees, students, and visitors collectively support thousands of jobs and businesses.
“Midwestern University is proud to make a significant impact on the economy, healthcare, and education in Maricopa County and beyond,” stated Kathleen H. Goeppinger, Ph.D., President and CEO of Midwestern, in a press release. “It is wonderful to see how our students, faculty, and staff contribute to the local community in multiple ways - economically and through volunteerism and service, research, and exceptional patient care.”
The Applied Economics study highlights several major contributions, including $75.9 million spent on equipment, services, and supplies, supporting 455 jobs and generating $36.3 million in local labor income. Student spending accounted for $172.5 million, boosting labor income by $41.2 million, while university employees contributed $173.7 million in consumer spending.
Glendale campus visitors, including prospective students and at events, added $9.6 million.
Midwestern also plays a role in advancing scientific research, securing $2.9 million in grants for 2023-24, a $1 million increase from the past five years. These funds support studies in medical treatments, diagnostics and evidence-based healthcare practices.
The university directly serves the community through its five healthcare clinics, providing essential services to nearly 140,000 human and animal patients annually. These include the Multispecialty Clinic, Dental Institute, Eye Institute, Animal Health Institute, and Therapy Institute, all located on the Glendale campus. These facilities offer hands-on training for students.
Midwestern University has $269.7 million in planned construction projects, expected to create thousands of jobs and stimulate more economic growth.
