Glendale Mayor Jerry P. Weiers recently visited the Western Maricopa Education Center Southwest Campus to meet with welding students and staff and get a look at a special project underway in the state-of-the-art welding workshop.
During the visit, Weiers toured the campus facilities, spoke with students and staff, and observed how hands-on technical training is preparing local students for high-demand careers in the skilled trades.
"It was a great day to see students utilizing their hands-on trade education in such an impressive, state-of-the-art facility," Weiers stated in apress release. "I had the opportunity to visit both students and staff, and I was thoroughly impressed by the campus, the immersive learning environment, and the incredible knowledge, skills, and dedication these students demonstrate.
The visit held personal significance for Mayor Weiers, who drew on his background as a trailer fabrication business owner. He attributes the success of his early career in manufacturing and trade work with giving him the financial foundation and opportunity to later run for mayor.
Weiers said trade skills offer a reliable path to a good career and financial stability.
He praised trade schools like West-MEC for offering essential alternatives to students not interested in college. West-MEC provides real-world knowledge and extensive hands-on training for high-demand industries.
"It is truly great to see the next generation of skilled trades professionals gaining real-world experience as they prepare for careers that will make a lasting difference in our growing economy," Weiers said. "Whether through welding, construction, or other technical fields, these programs give students the tools they need to build rewarding careers."
While West-MEC's Southwest Campus is in Buckeye, the Career and Technical Education district is based at 6997 N. Glen Harbor Blvd., Glendale.
