Glendale to decide whether to mandate face masks Friday in emergency meeting

Glendale will decide whether to mandate face masks when residents are outdoors or in public places in an emergency meeting Friday morning after Gov. Doug Ducey on Wednesday announced he will give city, town and county officials the power to enact and enforce requirements for people to wear face masks.

Mayor Jerry Weiers said in a social media post:

"Today Governor Doug Ducey authorized AZ cities to mandate wearing face masks in public spaces. I just called an Emergency Special Voting Meeting for Friday morning, June 19 for the City of Glendale, Arizona - Government City Council to discuss & vote on a measure to protect the public from #Covid19 . #MaskUpAZ"

Mr. Weiers did not specify the time or location of the meeting and Glendale has yet to add the meeting to its agenda. Recent City Council and Planning Commission meetings have taken place in the Glendale Civic Center, 5750 W. Glenn Drive, rather than the City Council Chambers at City Hall because the Civic Center provides more space for social distancing during the meetings.

Mr. Ducey's reversal on his stance to allow local government agencies the choice to mandate masks comes as Arizona's COVID-19 crisis has worsened. Cases have risen since the governor's stay-at-home order was lifted May 15.  The state had a record high of new cases — 2,392 — Tuesday, totaling 39,097 in the state and 20,670 in Maricopa County.
