Glendale student graduating from ASU takes to the skies

Daughter of Iraqi refugees ready for Air Force, space exploration

A daughter of refugees who fled Iraq in the 1990s following the Iran-Iraq war and settled in Glendale is one of the most accomplished of the more than 2,000 military-connected students graduating from Arizona State University May 11.

First-generation college student Mareem Al-Mosawi will be commissioned as a military officer, along with 32 other Air Force cadets during a ceremony at 8 a.m. May 12 on the Tempe campus.

Al-Mosawi served as deputy commander of the 250-member student wing this semester for ASU's Air Force ROTC Detachment 025, the "Flying Devils," where she was on a full academic scholarship. She also received scholarships to take civilian pilot lessons.
