Members of the Glendale Mayor's Youth Advisory Commission partnered with the city's Community Services Department to help stuff backpacks on July 29 for local students as they prepare to head back to school.
The annual Glendale backpack drive collects donated school supplies from across the community to ensure children have the essential items they need for a successful start. Volunteers filled backpacks with notebooks, pencils, pens, folders, and other classroom essentials to be distributed to families in need.
"I am incredibly proud of these young men and women and the difference they continue to make in our community," Mayor Jerry P. Weiers stated in a press release. "These students are choosing to give back and make Glendale a better place, especially for those in need. They represent the next generation of leaders, and I couldn't be prouder of what they are accomplishing."
MYAC brings together high school students from across Glendale to learn about local government while developing leadership, communication, and civic engagement skills. Members participate in volunteer projects and community events that allow them to make an impact while preparing them to become future leaders.
"Giving back to our community means so much to our MYAC students," said MYAC member Kenna Wasson. "The backpack stuffing event is always one of their favorite service projects because they know they're helping children begin the school year with confidence and the supplies they need to succeed."
