A 28-year-old Glendale man has been arrested by Peoria police and charged with several counts of robbery for allegedly stealing cell phones from teenage girls, authorities said Monday.
Dominic Gonzalez was arrested about 8:45 a.m. Aug. 22 by Peoria detectives, with assistance from Peoria SWAT, police said.
An investigation began June 19 when Peoria officers responded to a business in the 8000 block of West Bell Road regarding a stolen cell phone.
Detectives conducted several interviews and obtained surveillance video, which “shows Gonzalez recording a juvenile female inside a store with his own cell phone.
“As they were exiting, Gonzalez approached the juvenile female who was actively using her phone. Gonzales went up to her and forcibly grabbed her phone out of her hands,” a Peoria Police Department release stated.
The cell phone was in “unlocked” status, giving the suspect access to all the teen’s applications, videos, photographs and more, police said.
Gonzalez ran out of the store and left the area in a black Toyota Corolla, according to the release.
Detectives were notified of an additional call regarding a stolen cell phone of another teenage girl from the same location, and after reviewing the video and comparing photographs from the other incident, they identified Gonzalez as being involved, police said.
During that incident, Gonzalez followed the teen through the store and took her cell phone, which also was in the "unlocked" position, police said, adding the suspect ran out of the store and left the area in the same black Toyota Corolla.
Gonzalez was taken into custody without incident. Charges may be added or amended as the investigation continues, police said.
A search warrant was conducted at Gonzalez’s home, and clothing he was wearing during the two incidents was found, the release stated, but the cell phones were not located.
