Glendale council candidates give views on Conchas case at forum

Not only did the Glendale Woman’s Club get all four candidates in the two competitive City Council races to take part in its candidates forum June 16, moderator Cheryl Kappes had a very topical question to ask them.

Kappes, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs Arizona State President, asked candidates how they would handle a controversial and current event. The forum was a day after Maricopa Superior Court Judge Greg Como found the council’s 4-3 vote to remove the Cactus District council member Lupe Conchas “illegal and void.”

On May 28, Mayor Jerry Weiers and Councilmembers Lauren Tolmachoff, Ray Malnar and Dianna Guzman voted for Conchas’ removal based on their interpretation of the city charter’s provision that the mayor and council “shall hold no other public office for which they receive compensation except that of a notary public or member of the National Guard or naval of military reserve.”
