Downtown Glendale starts Summerween tradition

Guests can celebrate pumpkins, ghosts and skeletons early with Historic Downtown Glendale’s inaugural Summerween event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16.

This free family event is about a holiday originated from an episode of Disney’s animated show, “Gravity Falls,” in which the town of Gravity Falls celebrates Halloween twice a year because residents love it so much.

“Many of the shops and eateries throughout the Historic Catlin Court and Old Towne Entertainment Districts are getting ready for this special Summerween day,” said Cherlynn Berry, owner of 2Share a Unique Boutique and creator of the Summerween event.

From pink ghosts and jack-o-melons to skeletons dressed in bikinis, the area will be ready to welcome guests. Activities planned for the day include an area-wide Ghost Bingo with prizes, make and take crafts, themed menu items at the one-of-a-kind eateries, and Summerween-inspired gifts and décor at the locally owned boutiques and specialty shops.

In addition, the 2Share Boutique will host a dog adoption. Guests can begin (or add to) the Downtown Glendale Charm Bracelet featuring an Summerween charm drop. Wearing a favorite Halloween costume with a summer twist is encouraged.

Summerween also has a charity component. Pet supplies including dog food and dog toys are being collected for the Arizona based Got Your Six K9 Rescue. Founded in 2021, GY6K9DR’s mission is to rescue German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, and other working breeds from shelters and assess them for roles such as service, assistance, therapy or companionship.

The organization places dogs into therapy, service, search and rescue, or homes with veterans suffering from PTSD, at no cost to the veterans, aiming to reduce the financial burden (which can reach up to $50,000 per dog). Drop off donations at 2Share a Unique Boutique.

Begin at the Arizona Information Center in Memory Lane Trinkets and Treasures, 5836 W. Palmaire Ave., to pick up the activity list, Ghost Bingo card, and event map. 2Share a Unique Boutique, 5807 W. Glendale Ave., will have Bingo prize announcements.

Summerween is sponsored by 2Share a Unique Boutique in partnership with the downtown Business community. For information, call 602-319-5258.
