'Blood Moon' rises soon at Glendale CC

Witness the 'Blood Moon' and celebrate a total lunar eclipse at Glendale Community College’s A.S.T.R.O. Club’s Evening Skys: Lunar Eclipse event.

The event is 8 p.m. to Midnight - from 8:50 to Midnight is the uumbral stages to full eclipse - Thursday, March 13 in the observatory at the Glendale Community College, North Campus, 5727 W. Happy Valley Road in Phoenix.

The observatory is located on the west side of the campus, next to the Dinnebito building.

This event is open to students and members of the community who have an interest in astronomy, or are curious and want to experience this rare lunar occurrence.

Activities include;

  • View the eclipse through the observatory’s eight-inch Celestronhigh-powered telescopes.
  • GCC faculty from the astronomy and geology departments will answer questions.
  • Geo-planetary display complete with real meteorite samples.
  • Live feed of the eclipse on a large screen TV.
  • Hot cocoa and moon pies.
  • Hands-on experiences include:
    • Make a planisphere (star chart analog computing instrument) that maps the stars visible in the night sky at different times of the year.
    • Make a mini light saber by creating a working electrical ‘paper circuit’.
    • Make a soda straw rocket or a straw loop plane.
