A new automatic-placement requirement could move more high-performing Higley Unified School District middle-school students into advanced math, including some who qualify academically but currently aren't taking the more challenging courses.
Higley officials estimate 227 current seventh-graders, or about 29% of the grade, and 208 eighth-graders, or about 24%, would have qualified for automatic advanced math placement based on last year's scores.
Most already are taking advanced math, but 11 seventh-graders and eight eighth-graders who meet the qualification standard are not, according to information the district provided in response to questions from the Gilbert Independent.
