Apache Junction group plans event marking 25th anniversary of Sept. 11 attacks

Essay contest answers ‘Why is Learning About 9/11/2001 Important to Me?’

Military veterans, first-responders, city of Apache Junction and business employees, and local residents have been meeting to plan an event — including sponsoring an essay contest — marking the 25-year anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the U.S. when nearly 3,000 people were killed.

A committee led by Councilmember Bambi Johnson recently met at the Apache Junction Public Library to finalize the program for an 8-9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, event at the gazebo at Apache Junction Veterans’ Memorial Park, 1001 N. Idaho Road.

The program will include an introduction by Johnson, a welcome by the mayor, a flag raising by the Apache Junction Police Department and Superstition Fire and Medical District’s honor guard pipe and drums, and remarks by the police and fire chiefs.
