Florence has entered into an intergovernmental agreement with Pinal County and the city of Apache Junction to support the development of the Central Arizona Project National Recreation Trail.
The Florence Town Council approved entering the agreement during its Tuesday, Sept. 6 meeting.
Florence has been working with Pinal County and Apache Junction in planning for a future recreational trail alongside the CAP canal “which will eventually provide a route approximately 336 miles in length from Tucson to the Colorado River,” according to a staff report.
The Florence segment of the CAP project will be just more than 5 miles long and the current proposed plan potentially includes two trailheads within the town of Florence. The CAP trail will allow for recreational use by bicyclists, pedestrians and horse riders.
Currently, there is no date of completion set. The county is taking the lead in coordinating the project and Florence will only be responsible for the areas of the project within the town’s limits.
