Health care company helps Chandler elementary-age readers, others

UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Arizona recently donated more than $16,000, in addition to 4,500 books to four area elementary schools to help kids in underserved areas grow as readers.
Employee volunteers from UnitedHealthcare also staffed book fairs and read to the children.
More than 2,350 students at Longfellow Elementary in Mesa, Galveston Elementary in Chandler, along with a pair of elementary schools in Phoenix, took home the more than 4,500 books.
Each student was able to choose two free books that will help grow their home libraries and allow them to practice literary skills at home with their families.
UnitedHealthcare collaborated with the Scholastic Book Fair Program — which provided books and equipment — to make the book fairs a reality.
“Providing opportunities for kids to improve reading and writing skills is critical to the long-term health and success in children as they grow older,” said Jean Kalbacher, CEO, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Arizona.
