Chandler Police take shooting suspect into custody

Posted

The Chandler Police Department announced Tuesday it's searching for a man who is suspected of a number of crimes that led to an area of North Chandler being locked down Monday.

Later in the day Tuesday, the department announced that man was in custody.

At about 10:30 a.m. Monday, Chandler Police responded to a report of a shooting in the 800 block of North Santa Anna Street in Chandler.  On arrival, police said, officers located a female victim with non-life-threatening injuries, and she was transported to a local hospital.

The suspect was identified as her ex-boyfriend, Alan Burgener, 40.  The shooting occurred after an altercation between Burgener and the victim which resulted in the gun discharging and injuring the victim.

Burgener fled the residence and, soon after, broke into a nearby apartment and stole a vehicle from unrelated victims.  The vehicle he stole, and is believed to still be in, is a 2017 Silver Ford Mustang convertible with a black top and bearing Washington State plates of BHF3410.

Past police contacts with Burgener have been for assault, domestic violence, disorderly conduct, trafficking of stolen property and multiple narcotics-related offenses.

Police said Burgener is a known drug user and currently does not have a permanent residence.  He has family ties and contacts in Mesa.

Late Tuesday, police said they confirmed that Burgener is in custody. An officer-involved shooting did occur in his apprehension, but neither Burgener nor the involved officers were injured.

Chandler police said will be a heavy police presence in the area while this investigation is conducted, though didn't specify if that area was the same Dobson/Ray intersection.
