Chandler Police have provided some details about a man shot and killed by an officer earlier this week.
The suspect who was killed was identified as Richard Ring, 39. He did not have a permanent residence and has family ties in the city of Chandler, police said in a news release.
Police said Wednesday at about 11:50 a.m., officers responded to a robbery call at a hardware store near Alma School and Warner roads. The suspect was reported to have shoplifted from the store, fought with a store employee, and left out the back, the release said.
The suspect was then seen jumping fences into residential yards. Soon after, additional 911 calls were received, reporting the suspect jumping into yards and attempting to enter homes.
Responding officers located the suspect in the area, and inside a home he had illegally entered. An initial news release said the situation developed in the 2100 block of North Central Drive, a residental street northwest of the Alma School/Warner intersection.
As officers attempted to surround the home, police said, Ring exited armed with a knife that he had obtained from inside the home. Commands to drop the knife were ignored.
One officer fired his weapon at Ring, who died on-scene from his injuries. The officers involved were not injured, police said.
