Seton Catholic Prep’s long-awaited Event Center project will officially kick off construction on Wednesday, April 30 with a groundbreaking ceremony at what will be the location of the new building.
The event center will feature two floors that span more than 50,000 square feet, complete with a brand new lobby entrance, a new gymnasium, a new weight room, a film review room, office spaces and a spin-class room, according to a news release.
“This space will be vital not only for our school community, but our larger East Valley community,” Seton Principal Victor Serna said in the release. “We aim to provide state-of-the-art facilities to match our strong Catholic-faith based college preparatory experience for our Sentinels.”
The new space, along with additional improvements to the current gymnasium, will not only be used by Sentinel athletic programs. It will also enable Seton to host any number of Catholic or secular events, such as all-school masses, dances and those hosted by outside organizations.
The Founded in Faith - Building on Excellence Campaign for the new center began in 2021. Improvements included in that project have already been made, such as air conditioning being installed in the current McMahon Gymnasium in 2023 and renovated boys and girls locker rooms in 2025.
Last fall, the project received a $7 million gift from Shea Homes and the school secured additional funding to move forward with the construction timeline.
Seton would like to thank all of its community members who made donations, pledged their support or offered prayers to make this project possible, the release states.
“It truly takes a village for a project this large to come to fruition and we couldn’t have done it without the generous gifts from our Seton Catholic community,” Serna said. “It is because of them that we are able to begin construction on this new facility that will serve Sentinels for generations to come.”
The April 30 celebration will be open to the community and will last from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with food and refreshments available after the ceremony.
