Chandler-area University Women host speaker, announce scholarships

The Southeast Valley Branch of the American Association of University Women welcomes Sarah Lords from the Fresh Start Women’s Foundation as guest speaker at its 5:30 p.m. meeting Monday, Nov. 16 at Oakwood Country Club.

Prospective members are welcome.

Lords is the senior director of brand and strategic communication for Fresh Start, a local nonprofit. Its social services, life skills coaching and job skills training help Arizona women facing major life challenges achieve personal and economic self-sufficiency, according to a news release.

Since 1989, the Southeast Valley AAUW Branch has supported a variety of local educational programs and scholarships for women and girls, emphasizing science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM fields where women have been under-represented.

Lords leads Fresh Start’s initiatives to communicate the organization’s mission and generate meaningful impact for clients and the community.

Also, the cost of community college is a bit lighter this fall for five more students at Chandler-Gilbert Community College, thanks to newly awarded $1,500 scholarships from the Southeast Valley AAUW branch.

The scholarships are geared toward students studying to advance, change careers or re-enter the workforce.
Scholarship priority is given to studies in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. Among the latest recipients’ career choices are AI and machine learning, mortuary science and nursing.
