As a dedicated advocate for mental health, I am excited to announce a transformative initiative in collaboration with our cities of Tempe and Chandler.
We are launching the Beyond the Shop program to train our local barbers and stylists as mental health advocates. This initiative is vital in addressing the growing need for mental health support in our communities.
I have long been passionate about mental health awareness. To shed light on this critical issue, I started the first Mental Health Awareness Walk in Chandler alongside candlelight vigils and various community events.
I am proud to partner with Tempe’s elected officials, including Mayor Corey Woods and Vice Mayor Doreen Garlid, as well as other community members like Joy, a Chandler resident and the owner of Cut N Corners barber shop in Tempe.
Joy told me “I am proud that our elected officials like OD Harris continues to expand the conversation on Mental Health. Providing this training will only help expand the awareness.”
Barbers and stylists are already uniquely positioned in our communities as trusted confidants. They provide grooming services, a listening ear, and a supportive environment.
The Beyond the Shop initiative will enhance this relationship by equipping them with the tools and training to identify and support clients struggling with mental health challenges. This program will empower our barbers and stylists to connect individuals with life-changing resources that promote health and wellness.
To facilitate this important initiative, the city of Chandler will sponsor the registration fee for 25 local barbers and stylists to participate in this crucial training. I encourage all barbers and stylists in Chandler and Tempe to take advantage of this incredible opportunity to enhance their skills and make a meaningful impact in the lives of their clients.
Together, we can work to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and create a supportive environment for those seeking help. For more details and to register for the training, please visit this city of Chandler’s press release.
Let’s join forces to prioritize mental health in our communities, one haircut at a time.
