A 126-room LivAway Suites hotel is to be constructed approximately 2,000 feet north of the northeast corner of South Greenfield Road and East Baseline Road in Mesa.
The landscaping and design for the LivAway Mesa Greenfield on 4.5 acres were discussed during the March 11 meeting of the Mesa Design Review Board. Chair Dane Astle, Vice Chair Justin Trexler and board member Paul Johnson were absent.
A Marriott hotel planned for the site will be replaced with the LivAway Suites hotel, Staff Planner Joshua Grandlienard said.
“The LivAway will be located on that eastern portion of the site,” he said. “This is for a 126-room hotel which is consistent with a previous approval. Vehicular access will be shared from that central kind of roundabout portion of driveway.”
Kelly Bell is the applicant. SREG Greenfield LLC is the owner.
A special-use permit is being sought with a site plan review to increase the allowed height limit from 30 feet to 50 feet. The four-story hotel is to have a gym, lobby and laundry area for guests, wrote Bell, president and managing member of Kbell Engineering LLC, in a project narrative.
“All architectural articulation is achieved by means of feature massing, varying fields of depth and parapet heights to satisfy city requirements,” it states. “The project proposes an outdoor common open space and amenity area. The open space area is 100% exposed to the sky except for those areas shaded by trees and landscaping.”
The all-volunteer Mesa Design Review Board is unique in that its composition is set by the zoning ordinance to include two architects; two from other design professions such as landscape architecture, engineering, urban planning, interior design or other design-related background; one contractor or developer; and two residents, according to the city’s website.
