A special use permit was recently approved for a comprehensive sign plan for an existing Bank of America east of South Alma School Road and south of West Southern Avenue in Mesa.
The Mesa Board of Adjustment on Jan. 4 voted unanimously in a consent agenda with other items to approve the sign plan for property at 1201 S. Alma School Road zoned limited commercial in a bonus intensity zone district.
The signs are proposed to be installed on an existing drive-thru canopy, Staff Planner Kwasi Abebrese said at a study session prior to the meeting.
“The existing (comprehensive sign plan) was approved in 1986 and modified in 1999 and it allowed for the installation of a 12.5-square-foot pan channel letters sign with approximately a 27-inch logo. And the proposed modification to this existing (comprehensive sign plan) will entail an increase in the sign area from 12.5 square feet to 38.71 square feet as well as inclusion of an additional sign at the north elevation of the existing drive-thru canopy,” he said.
Gary Spinner is the applicant. MW-G Mesa Tower LLC is the owner.
The signs are to be internally illuminated pan channel letters and 38.71 square feet each, Spinner of Pearson’s Sign Co. said in a written project narrative.
“With the current landscaping designs and the positioning of the building structures, Pearson’s Sign Co. and Bank of America have decided that this size of sign would be best, taking in consideration for traffic patterns, streetscape appeal and functional purpose of communication,” Spinner said.
The seven-member board conducts public meetings to hear and decide requests for variances, special-use permits and interpretations of the city of Mesa zoning ordinance and sign code. Members are appointed for staggered terms of three years, according to the city’s website.
