Chandler Council addresses water safety, drowning prevention

Posted

May was National Water Safety Month and Drowning Prevention Month.

Chandler City Council member Matt Orlando read a proclamation to draw awareness to the topics at their May 5 meeting.

Vice Mayor Christine Ellis, the Chandler Fire Department’s division chief for public relations, Blas Minor, and other staff took photos with the proclamation, which was officially signed by Mayor Kevin Hartke.

The proclamation included the details that water sports and other activities are a large part of daily life for many who live, work or play in Chandler, along with reiterating the commitment to keep educating the public about water safety, especially around the home.

It states proper water safety includes adult supervision of children who are around water, effective barriers, swim classes for non-swimmers and the use of certified life jackets where appropriate.

Orlando said he wanted to add “two eyes at all times,” as in at least one designated adult should be looking directly at all children who are in or around water.

A city staff member encouraged everyone in a family with any regular access to a pool or other water to take swimming lessons.

Minor reminded the public that first responders experience trauma when a drowning event occurs, so prevention affects more than just the immediate family.
