Cave Creek landmarks program to honor Local Jonny’s Tavern & Café

Posted

The Local Landmarks program, in conjunction with the Cave Creek Museum, announced Local Jonny’s Tavern & Café will receive recognition and an award.

A special event will take place at 10 a.m. Oct. 8 at Local Jonny’s, 6033 E. Cave Creek Road.

Local Landmarks awards community destinations with a bronze plaque in celebration of being part of the town’s heritage.

Local Jonny’s is one of three Local Landmarks to be presented during the 2026-27 season.

In the 1950s and ‘60s, the building that now houses Local Jonny’s was known as the Highway Variety Store. During the ensuing years, other businesses came and went including the Highway Variety Hardware store, a barber shop, locksmith, an auto repair shop and Lauren’s Feed and Tack shop before the location became a restaurant.

Prior to becoming Local Jonny’s, the property housed Cave Creek Coffee Company (C4), one of the most influential businesses in downtown Cave Creek during the late 1990s and 2000s.

Jon Oughterson and his wife Lauren Van Winkle leased the building in 2014 along with the Flat Tire Bike Shop. It was a unique set up – a coffee shop with a few breakfast items on one side and bicycle sales and service on the other.

They shared the building until 2020, when the bike shop moved to another location. During the pandemic, Local Jonny’s adjusted its business model to curbside and online service, selling many needed essentials and grocery items as well.

In 2021, Oughterson and Van Winkle remodeled and opened the tavern bar and rebranded it as Local Jonny’s Tavern and Café. The business officially switched to full table service and expanded to serve breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee drinks, cocktails and craft beer. The couple continues to support the community by holding fundraisers, donating to local public schools and sponsoring sports teams and local events.

The Local Landmarks’ effort focuses on iconic buildings and special spaces. Landmarks are recognized with a bronze plaque that connects the celebrated locations with a storytelling map. .
