Busy week ahead for Chandler Council

Posted

A $4.73 million design contract is one of many items the Chandler City Council will take on as it heads into one of its busiest weeks of the year, in terms of number of meetings.

Monday, the council will have an afternoon work session focused on the city’s annual budget, followed by three meetings that run consecutively, starting at 6 p.m.

Thursday, March 27, the council will hold an afternoon work session dedicated to capital improvement projects, followed by a 6 p.m. regular meeting.

All of this week’s meetings will be held at Chandler City Hall, 88 E. Chicago Street in downtown Chandler. The afternoon budget work sessions are held in a City Hall conference room; the 6 p.m. meetings are in the main council chamber.

The $4.73 million design contract is for design services with J2 Engineering & Environmental Design, LLC, for Mesquite Groves Park. The long-planned park, to be located in southeast Chandler north of Basha High School, is finally getting to the design phase, though the full cost and completion of the massive facility is spread over several budget years in the city’s capital projects plan.

The contract is one of more than 35 items on the consent agenda for Monday’s study session. That study session will be held after the council convenes as the city’s public housing authority for a one-resolution meeting and then a regular meeting.

Council members can pull study session items from the consent agenda for discussion. That same list is typically on the consent agenda for action at the following Thursday’s regular meeting.

Monday’s regular meeting includes the presentation of a Community Hero Award to Officer Brian Larison and proclamations for National Library Week and Valley Bike Month.

The next public steps in the city’s annual budget process would be a May 2 daylong budget briefing in which council will hear from department heads in council chambers. That would be followed by a public hearing and final budget and capital project adoption at June 12 meetings and the final adoption of the annual tax levy on June 26.
